Music gives a soul to the universe,
wings to the mind,
flight to the imagination,
a charm to sadness,
gaiety and life to everything.
It is the essence of order,
and leads to all that is good,
just and beautiful,
of which it is the invisible,
but never less,
dazzling, passionate, and eternal form.

Working with Roxy Rhythm
In August of 2002, we made drums with a group of 55 sixth, seventh, and eight graders. It was so much fun! Each person tie-dyed their drum head and stretched it on the drum frame. Everyone was so delighted with their own creation. Students took their drums home over the weekend to decorate the drum shell.

The next week, drumming for the first half-hour of the school day became a ritual. After about a week, one of the moms stopped me and gave me this poem that Mitchell, her seventh grade son wrote:

Amatieel - Mooreddenugt
(Drum of Knowledge)

According to popular belief, this drum has been inset with the powers of Knowledge and understanding.

The String around the head symbolizes the knowledge that holds the universe together.

The Weaved band represents the level of preciseness of which knowledge must pass.

The Rubies represent the beauty that knowledge can cause.

The Tassels symbolize the way knowledge branches off to grasp new learners.

The Final band represents how knowledge can be customized to all people's interests.

The Drum Head symbolizes how knowledge interacts with the mind to create new ideas.

And Finally the Drum itself is a symbol of how powerful Knowledge and Understanding can be by warping all others to let loose a thundering crash of Triumph echoing through our universe...

Seminars in Building Drums
Building drums in the classroom is a very rewarding experience. You can incorporate the decorating of the drum shell into an art project using a focus on a specific cultural art like African, Native American, Aboriginal, etc. Or it can be as simple as sending the drums home over the weekend to be decorated.

It is exciting to allow each person to tie-dye their own drum head and it can be accomplished in a 30 minute process.

We prefer to train or walk through the process with an adult or two. We also offer day long seminars where we come into the school for tie-dying and stretching drum heads with the students.

During a Roxy Rhythm seminar, four people at a time are taken to a tie-dye workstation. The soaked head is prepared and tie-dyed. We can discreetly pull 4 people at a time for 30 minutes while the classroom continues as usual. We tie-dye all morning long. After lunch, the tie-dyed heads are glued and stretched onto the drum shell in pairs of two people. The drums then have to sit untouched for 24-48 hours while the drum heads dry.
